Current Mood: accomplished
After two phone calls and three emails I finally heard the bad but not unexpected news from Cheryl: the Center hired a new temp who was supposed to leave by now but they're going to keep her on until the 30th. So I'll be going back to LA on Sunday with no job or prospects, as of now. I wrote to the temp agency to ask about the possibility of jobs that were eight or so hours three or four days a week, telling my rep that I needed Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for "writing my thesis and other obligations" (read: Disneyland?). Hopefully this would work out, because more than likely a temp job would pay more than if I just went out and got a job at Starbucks or a restaurant, although those would have more flexibility I imagine. I mean, I know temp work isn't going to count on my resume, so unless it's paying me more, why bother with a menial office job when I could be Jungle Cruising or waking up audio-animatronic birds? . I took the dog to get her drains out yesterday. One of the vet's assistants was pretty cute, and I looked all raggedy. We found some pouch covers online today; Dad wants me to get the camouflage one, and I think it is pretty cool (if they'll pay for it!) but Dr. Kaiser mentioned he had some at the clinic for free, I imagine, or at least covered by the health insurance. After the vet I picked up Emma from her AP test, almost in tears because she felt she had blown the last essay (which was admittedly a BITCH...art from the 1960s onward? Blatantly picked to cancel out the public school kids who have a month less studying than private/East Coast schools do). From what she told me about the rest of the test I think she did pretty damn well, but she was really upset. We went to Target with Mom, the dog pooped a lot on the grass and we got Dairy Queen blizzards. The poor thing slept in the car on the way home. It's hard to put all your eggs in one basket like that, to study a whole year and then think you blew it at the finish line, but I told her if you're going to get this upset about every big test you're going to have a heck of a time in college! . On a hopefully positive note on the job front, I submitted my first freelance Op-Ed piece to a news site that recruited me to write such things. The editor wants me to do Op-Ed pieces particularly as reactions to the media, since he noted that many of the sample pieces I submitted for his perusal showed an interest in surveying the media (he said, "You're damn good!"). I asked if I could respond to a particularly thorny editorial about how Hillary should quit, shame on her, blah de blah, coincidentally written by an old schoolmate from USC. He said that was just what he had in mind, so we'll see if he likes it. Not sure if I get paid, but it would be nice, wouldn't it? |
